Don't Die Dragonfly

Synopsis: After getting kicked out of school and sent to live with her grandmother, Sabine Rose is determined to become a "normal" teenage girl. She hides her psychic powers from everyone, even from her grandmother Nona, who also has "the gift." Having a job at the school newspaper and friends like Penny-Love, a popular cheerleader, have helped Sabine fit in at her new school. She has even managed to catch the eye of the adorable Josh DeMarco. Yet, Sabine can't seem to get the bossy voice of Opal, her spirit guide, out of her head . . . or the disturbing images of a girl with a dragonfly tattoo. Suspected of a crime she didn't commit, Sabine must find the strength to defend herself and, later, save a friend from certain danger.

Review:
When I received this book in the mail via my roommates mailbox I was so excited! I couldn't wait to finish the book I was reading to begin on this one. But this book surpassed all expectations I had. Right from the first page I knew I would love it when I read that one of the characters had dreadlocks! Not only that, but I love Sabine, the main character of the story.

The first thing that peaked my interest in the story was Sabine past, and how she was working so hard to cover it up, but at the same time giving subtle hints about what happened. After reading the book, I still don't know what happen but that goes hand in hand with the major cliffhanger at the end (which made me cry out in frustration!). I loved that Sabine didn't stick to just one type of friend throughout the story; she was friends with the goth girl, the respected loner, the cheerleader, and the all American, yet troubled, guy. There was even a mean jock who you definitely grow to hate in this book. Sabine's grandmother, Nona, seemed like the type of older woman I want to be when I become grey (more so than I am now!). I absolutely loved the part when she was painting a cow with pink flowers to make the cow feel better about herself when she stood next to the horse; I never thought of a cow as a canvas until now!

Overall, I absolutely loved this book. For me, it is ranked right next to Meg Cabot's series, The Mediator, another favorite of mine. I thought the characters and the plot worked so well together and there weren't any holes that were not meant to be there. Linda Joy Singleton managed to keep me on my toes the entire book and has me wanting more now that I have been left with the dreaded cliffhanger.

So even if you aren't into the supernatural books or books dealing with supernatural gifts, I suggest you pick this up on your next visit to the bookstore. There are so many more aspects to the books than just the characters psychic abilities. There is mystery, drama, love, heartbreak, and most of all, suspense!
